The genus Livistona covers as many as 4,000 species. The name Livistona refers to Patrick Murray, who was Baron of Livingston in the 17th century. He was a well-known botanist and co-founder of the botanical gardens of Edinburgh in Scotland.
One of the Livistona varieties that seems to be very popular is the Livistona rotundifolia, also known as the fan or table palm. In its areas of origin, the foliage of Livistona Rotundifolia is often used as roof covering or as protective covering for foods. In Western Europe it is mostly used in bouquets and flower arrangements.
The leaves of Livistona rotundifolia are shiny, green and pinnate. The lobes of the leaves are all adjoined in a fan-like shape. Leaves shoot up from the heart of the plant.
