Beargrass, or Xereophyllim Tenax, is a popular greenery for a reason. The grass is flexible, has a long shelf life and is available in various lengths. This way there is always a length that suits your arrangement or bouquet.

But did you know that the grass isn't actually grass at all?

What do you really know about beautiful Beargrass? We went to investigate the beautiful greenery. Read more quickly

A real hero

The beargrass grows in western North America. Here it grows from near sea level to over 2000 meters in open coniferous forests, dry ridges, rocky slopes and open spaces. There are strict rules when it comes to cutting Beargrass. You must have proper permission and permits to cut it.

Beargrass looks like grass, but is actually a member of the lily family. In the wild, you can spot the Beargrass with a beautiful white flower. This flower is shaped like an upside-down ice cream cone and has a wonderfully subtle, sweet scent. At the bottom of the stem, on which the flower grows, is the leaf. This grows in clusters around the trunk like a waterfall. The leaf can grow up to a meter in length. This allows us to offer the leaf in different lengths. You can also recognize Beargrass by its olive green color.

We call Beargrass a real hero, and for good reason. The foliage is essential to the fire ecology of regions where it is native. This is because Beargrass has Rhizomes. Beargrass is often the first plant to emerge after a fire.

Centuries of use

From animals to native tribes, Beargrass has been used for years.

For example, the leaves are used to weave baskets, leaf fibers for clothing and the rhizomes are roasted for food.

Did you know that Grizzly bears use the leaf in their den during hibernation? Other animals also use the Beargrass. For example, deer like to eat the flowers.

Today, Beargrass is also widely used in the flower industry. And we understand why!

The foliage is flexible but has a long shelf life. This makes it extremely popular to use in a bouquet or arrangement. Braided, curved or upright, there are many possibilities with Beargrass.
