Behind the scenes

Our boxwood branches come from the Boxwood Sempervirens hedge plant. This plant is green all year round, which makes it extremely popular in gardens. Unfortunately for us, the foliage is not available all year round. This is because the Boxwood plants can only be cut once every 5 years. This way the plant has enough time to grow strong branches again. 

Boxwood grows naturally in the area around the Mediterranean Sea, in the hilly regions, but because the boxwood feels particularly at home on cool mountain slopes there, this hedge plant can withstand cooler weather and tolerates shade without any problems. In the wild, the Boxwood grows into a large shrub. 

We import our boxwood from France. 

Easter

Boxwood is a popular product, especially around Easter. This is because the greenery is used in the Catholic Church on Palm Sunday as a reminder of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. In the Bible, reference is made to palm branches, but because these do not grow in the Netherlands, Boxwood became the replacement for the palm. 

The Boxwood twigs are processed in the Palm Easter stick that is carried by the children during Palm Sunday. 

We also see many Boxwood wreaths towards Easter. Wreaths have a symbolic meaning: the cycle of the year. A great time to welcome spring with a Boxwood wreath.
