Warm sunshine, bumpy roads and vast fields of soft gray eucalyptus.
When we describe it, it almost sounds like a fairy tale, but this is reality in Portugal, where our colleagues Karst, Ron, Gerben and Vera visited a number of suppliers.
Cooperation is the foundation within WBE, not only with colleagues or customers, but also with suppliers. Therefore, it is not surprising that we have long-term cooperation with some of our suppliers. Therefore, it was high time to visit our suppliers in Portugal again.
On the way to this supplier we could already enjoy beautiful views. Because where we see the products mostly on cask, there some varieties just grow along the side of the road, special to see!
Buijnink Internacional is one of our trusted suppliers, with whom WBE has worked for a long time. We were welcomed by the owner, Leon, and his children, Elisa and Daan, both of whom play an important role in the company. Our colleagues were given a tour of the company and some of the fields. Buijnink has hundreds of acres with different species of Eucalyptus and Leucadendron, a beautiful sight.
Sustainability is paramount at Buijnink. For example, they use no pesticides, are Global Gap and MPS A+ certified and have low waste.
The Eucalyptus is cleaned and sorted by hand. Although this generates a lot of waste, Buijnink also has a solution for this: the "waste" of the Eucalyptus is processed into oil and the remains, after the oil is extracted, are used again as compost. In this way, they are left with hardly any waste.
Once in the field, our colleagues could enjoy beautiful views: fields of Leucadendron and Eucalyptus as far as the eye could see, almost too impressive to capture on film. Nevertheless, our colleagues made an attempt.
After visiting supplier Buijnink Internacional, our colleagues visited several other suppliers. Although these companies were often smaller, they certainly made no less of an impression. They saw how Eucalyptus Pencil actually grows on the same plant as Eucalyptus Lancet. They learned more about the drought in Portugal and gained new insights about the growth of Cinerea. They also looked at products like Baby Blue, Pittosporum, Arbutus and Parvifolia.
All products are cut by hand from the plants and taken to a large hall. Here the different varieties are cleaned and sorted. This is all done by hand. Then the Eucalyptus is prepared to come our way.
At each vendor, our colleagues received a warm welcome and got a look at all the details of the companies. We are happy to share these photos with you! All in all, it was an impressive trip that involved catching up with both new and familiar suppliers. We look forward to offering these wonderful products in our webshop.
Did you know that almost all products from Portugal are selected by branch and length. This makes these products ideal for bouquet shops and retail.
