A significant portion of the decorative foliage traded worldwide consists of wild-harvested products. Examples include salal, bear grass, chico, pistachio, coral, and various types of moss. These products are not cultivated in the same way as regular flowers and plants, which means that existing GAP certification schemes do not always align with actual practices.
This presents a significant challenge: wild-harvested products account for over 40% of the total supply of decorative greenery, but due to current practices, they cannot yet be certified under existing GAP schemes.
That is why WBE is working with Adomex, Coloriginz, and FTG to find a solution. Under the guidance of Coventry University, FSI, and IDH, we are developing a widely accepted alternative that will also create greater transparency and traceability in the supply chain for wild-harvested products.
In this way, together with the sector, we are striving to take a step forward for a product group that does not easily fit within the existing frameworks.
